Emerald Ash Borer
Invasive beetle devastating ash trees across Eastern Ontario. All ash species are at risk.
Watch for:
- •D-shaped exit holes in bark
- •Canopy dieback starting from top
- •Bark splitting and woodpecker damage
All ash trees should be assessed by a certified arborist to determine treatment options or removal timeline.
Dutch Elm Disease
Fungal disease spread by bark beetles that has killed millions of elm trees across North America.
Watch for:
- •Wilting and yellowing leaves in summer
- •Brown streaking in sapwood
- •Branch flagging (dead branches with leaves attached)
Early detection is critical. Infected branches may be pruned to save the tree if caught early.
LDD Moth (Spongy Moth)
Formerly known as Gypsy Moth. Caterpillars defoliate trees in late spring, with periodic outbreak years causing severe damage.
Watch for:
- •Visible caterpillars with blue and red spots
- •Skeletonized or completely eaten leaves
- •Egg masses on tree trunks (tan, fuzzy patches)
Healthy trees typically survive defoliation. Repeated years of heavy feeding may require professional intervention.
